When Helping Heals: A Faith-Based Approach to Poverty

Written by MayBell Developments – July 21, 2026

In a world that values quick fixes and convenience, it can be easy to conflate temporary aid with lasting impact.

At MayBell, we believe in a deeper, more redemptive approach, one rooted in scripture and guided by relationship.

In a previous post, we reflected on the depth of human brokenness– the fractures caused by the fall of man that ripple through our hearts, our relationships, and even the systems we live within. It was a reminder that we are the broken, they are the broken, it is the broken. Yet, praise God, in Christ there is healing for it all.

This truth continues to lay the foundation for how MayBell approaches poverty today. When Helping Hurts, a foundational resource from the Chalmers Centre, reminds us that helping the poor without understanding the nature of poverty can unintentionally cause harm. We must move beyond the mindset of “doing for” and lean into the power of “walking with.”

Our programs– work readiness, financial education, tenancy training, on-site childcare, and personalized case planning– are all provided through a mentorship approach that fully supports each family.

Through this integrated, faith-based approach, lasting change takes root. Residents begin to understand their worth. They find community. They build resilience. They experience healing.

We believe the Gospel is not just about salvation in the future, it’s about transformation in the now. When Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10), He meant that fullness should touch every area of life, including where and how we live.

The intent behind MayBell’s mission isn’t just to address homelessness. Through practical support we seek to confront emotional exhaustion, spiritual isolation, and generational cycles of despair. By weaving together support systems that care for the whole person, within the context of community, we walk alongside residents as Christ restores what sin has broken– bringing healing, hope and wholeness.

True help affirms a person’s God-given ability to grow, lead, and contribute.

This is the kind of help that heals. And you can be a part of it.
